CHAPTER 15

The next morning Jane had a slight headache when she woke up. She sat up and rubbed her temples, wishing it to go away as quickly as possible.

She had a feeling it was because her mind hadn’t stopped rolling over what Abby had suggested. That there was someone out there causing all the arguing to happen. It felt like a clue that she knew fit, but she couldn’t find where. Because if someone or even a group was behind this, why? What would be the purpose of making both sides so incredibly mad at one another? It had driven her crazy all night, making sleep more elusive than normal.

When she left her room, she went to Libby’s first and knocked on the door. “Time to get up, kiddo,” she said as she pushed the door open. When she saw that Libby hadn’t even moved, she said, “Libby?”

Libby groaned as she rolled over. “Mom, I’m cold,” she muttered. “And my body hurts.”

Jane crossed the room, sat on the edge of the bed, and reached for her daughter's forehead. To the back of her hand, Libby felt warm, but her fingers also felt cool. She leaned forward and gently pressed her lips to Libby’s forehead to check the temperature with them instead. Still warm.

“You feel a little warm,” Jane told her. “Stay here and I’ll get the thermometer.”

Libby nodded and tugged her blankets up higher as she closed her eyes again.

Jane hurried from the room and met Tyson at the bathroom. He waited patiently as she retrieved the thermometer. “Is Libby sick?” he asked.

“It’s looking that way,” Jane grumbled as she headed back to her daughter's room.

Jane took Libby’s temperature and when it beeped she saw it was over 100. With a sigh, she leaned back. “You’re sick.” Libby groaned. “You’ll still have to get up so you can go to Grandma and Grandpa’s for the day.” Jane sighed.

“I’ll give them a call and take you by there before I head to work.” She was grateful her parents were retired and would be able to watch her. Otherwise, she wasn’t sure what she’d do. She’d probably be forced to take the day off and sit at home with her, which was a sobering thought.

“Okay,” Libby groaned. “But I’m bringing toys.”

“Only three,” Jane said firmly. “We’re not packing everything over to their house for the day.” She stood up and began to head for the doorway.

Libby groaned as she sat up and started to move around a little. “Can I leave my pajamas on? I don’t feel like I have the energy to get dressed.”

Jane noticed she was wearing her flannel pjs with the dinosaurs on them. “Yeah, those will be okay,” she said. “But I want you to put shoes and socks on.”

Libby nodded and Jane left the room to finish getting ready for the morning. She sent a message to her parents to let them know she’d be bringing Libby by. Fortunately, Tyson took care of himself and waited for the bus on his own.
